Airplanes are only one of the eight categories of aircraft. Within those categories, aircraft can be divided into different classes and types, each with its own certificate, rating or endorsement requirements.

Flying Was Not Built in a Day
The dream of flight has fascinated humanity for centuries, a vision of soaring through the skies, defying gravity and reaching what once seemed impossible. But flight, as magical as it may feel today, was not created overnight. It was built through generations of curiosity, experimentation, failure and engineering progress.
From ancient myths and Leonardo da Vinciβs sketches of flying machines to the Wright brothersβ first successful powered flight in 1903, each attempt brought new lessons and each breakthrough moved aviation forward.
Today, every aircraft that lifts off is part of that long story of human imagination and persistence. Aircraft now come in many forms, each designed for a different purpose, mission and way of flying.
History
Modern aviation was built over time through curiosity, experimentation, failure and innovation.
Design
Different aircraft use different designs to stay airborne, move through the air and remain controlled.
Purpose
Aircraft come in many forms, each designed for a different mission, environment and way of flying.
An aircraft category is the broadest classification of aircraft, based on intended use and operating environment, grouping together aircraft with similar characteristics and purposes. Aviation authorities worldwide, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), use these categories to establish a standardized framework for managing various kinds of aircraft.
In the context of pilot certification, aircraft categories define the specific kind of aircraft a pilot is authorized to operate. Each category requires tailored training and certification to address the unique operating characteristics of that particular category.Β
Within an aircraft category, there are classes, which serve as subdivisions based on additional characteristics. Classes help further specify the type of training and certification. A pilot needs to be a safe operator of a particular kind of aircraft within each broader category.
Then, within an aircraft class, certain aircraft also have a type, referring to specific models distinguished by unique design or operational characteristics. This type designation is essential for larger or more advanced aircraft, as it requires specialized training and certification. Therefore, a type rating is necessary for pilots to operate particular models that are complex or large.
Fixed-wing aircraft that rely on forward motion to generate airspeed and create lift.
Requires an Airplane Category Rating on the pilotβs certificate, starting with a Sport Pilot (SPL), Recreational Pilot (RPL), or Private Pilot License (PPL) certificate for airplanes.
Single-Engine Land, Multi-Engine Land, Single-Engine Sea, Multi-Engine Sea.
Aircraft that use rotary wings or rotors to generate lift.
Requires a Rotorcraft Category Rating, starting with a PPLΒ for helicopters. For gyroplanes, a SPL is also available.
Helicopter and Gyroplane.
Aircraft that use engines to direct thrust for vertical takeoff and landing.
CERTIFICATION
Requires a Powered Lift Category Rating, typically demanding extensive training due to complex controls. Entry level is PPL.
NO CLASS
Aircraft that do not rely on engines and instead use lift from air currents to remain aloft.
CERTIFICATION
Requires a Glider Category Rating,Β pilots must earn a Glider Certificate to operate.
NO CLASS
DEFINITION
Aircraft that achieve lift through gases lighter than air.
CERTIFICATION
Requires a Lighter-Than-Air Category Rating, starting with PPL.
2 CLASSES
Balloon and Airship.
Aircraft, like trikes, controlled by shifting the pilotβs weight rather than traditional control surfaces.
CERTIFICATION
Requires a Weight-Shift-Control Category Rating, entry-level is SPL.
Land and Sea.
Aircraft that use a flexible, parachute-like wing and a motorized frame.
Requires a Powered Parachute Category Rating, entry-level is SPL.
2 CLASSES
Land and Sea.
Aircraft propelled by rocket engines, primarily experimental or space-bound vehicles.
Requires a specialized Rocket Category Certification due to high-speed and altitude requirements, often regulated beyond standard pilot licensing.
NO CLASS
Understanding aircraft categories, classes and types is an important part of learning how aviation is organized.
Every pilot certificate requires both aeronautical knowledge and practical flight training, and pilots can later add ratings or privileges for different aircraft, operations or levels of flying.
At My Flight Academy, we focus on airplane training. If your goal is to fly airplanes, you can explore the recreational path, the commercial path or continue with the online ground school program.
